The Centre for Kurdish Studies invite you to join our first talk entitled Shaikh Mahmoud and the Kurdish uprising: Changing British attitudes towards Kurdish autonomy

In this talk Richard Wilding explores British relations with Kurdish tribes and leaders in the Mosul vilayet before, during and after World War I. He references the written accounts and annotated photographs made by British administrators in Kurdistan to assess their fluctuating support for Kurdish autonomy. examining the series of misunderstandings and external events that ultimately led to frustration on both sides.

Bio
Richard Wilding is a curator, writer, and film producer, focusing on heritage, history and cultural identity in the Middle East and North Africa. He is currently producing a documentary film about Shaikh Mahmoud and Kurdish / British relations in the years before, during and after World War I. Since 2012, Richard has been Creative Director of Gulan, a UK registered charity which promotes Kurdish culture. In 2013, Richard was awarded an outreach grant by The British Institute for the Study of Iraq towards his photography of the Erbil citadel. He has travelled extensively through Kurdistan and Northern Iraq, photographing the region’s heritage and archaeology and documenting its religious and ethnic diversity. Richard has worked on community projects with the Kurdish diaspora, including the publication Halabja: In the Golden Days, produced by Gulan in collaboration with the Kurdish community in Portsmouth, UK.
